Zawaya Gaming
Real-Time Multiplayer Platform
Devinity provided a team of backend and infrastructure engineers to architect and build Zawaya Gaming's real-time multiplayer platform from the ground up — delivering low-latency gameplay, AI-powered matchmaking, and tournament infrastructure at scale.
Engagement Overview
Engineers embedded, platform delivered
Zawaya Gaming came to Devinity with an ambitious vision: build a competitive multiplayer gaming platform capable of rivaling established players in the space. They had the game design expertise and creative direction, but needed a team of battle-tested engineers to turn that vision into production-grade infrastructure.
Devinity embedded a dedicated squad of backend, infrastructure, and AI engineers directly into Zawaya's development workflow. Working as an extension of their in-house team, our engineers owned the real-time networking layer, matchmaking intelligence, auto-scaling infrastructure, and the anti-cheat systems that keep the platform fair and performant at scale.
This was a staff augmentation engagement — Zawaya retained full product ownership while Devinity provided the specialized engineering firepower needed to ship fast and ship right.
Project Overview
The Challenge
Real-time at massive scale
Building a multiplayer gaming platform is one of the hardest problems in distributed systems engineering. Every millisecond of latency is felt by players. Every dropped frame or desynced game state erodes trust. And when tens of thousands of concurrent users are competing in real time, there is zero room for infrastructure that cannot keep up.
Zawaya needed a platform that could handle 100,000+ concurrent players with sub-50ms latency across global regions. Game state had to be synchronized in real time with deterministic conflict resolution — meaning two players pressing a button at the same millisecond would always produce a fair, consistent outcome. The matchmaking system had to balance skill levels, latency windows, and play style preferences within seconds, not minutes.
On top of the core multiplayer engine, the platform required a full tournament ecosystem with automated brackets, live leaderboards, and prize distribution — plus cross-device gameplay that felt equally responsive on desktop, mobile, and tablet. Anti-cheat had to be invisible to legitimate players but devastating to bad actors.
What We Built
Engineered for competitive play
Real-Time Game Engine
WebSocket-based game state synchronization built on Socket.io with custom conflict resolution algorithms. The engine handles thousands of concurrent game sessions, reconciling player inputs at sub-frame intervals to ensure every participant experiences a consistent, lag-free game world — even on unreliable mobile connections.
AI Matchmaking System
Machine learning-powered player matching that evaluates skill rating (Elo/Glicko-2), real-time latency measurements, historical play style data, and session behavior to create balanced lobbies in under two seconds. The model continuously retrains on match outcome data, reducing skill-gap mismatches by over 40% compared to traditional queue-based systems.
Tournament Infrastructure
Automated bracket generation supporting single-elimination, double-elimination, round-robin, and Swiss formats for up to 10,000 participants per event. Live leaderboards update in real time via WebSocket push, and the prize distribution engine handles payouts, sponsor integrations, and compliance checks without manual intervention.
Player Profiles & Progression
Comprehensive player identity system with XP accumulation, tiered ranking ladders, unlockable achievements, and social features including friend lists, clans, and in-game messaging. Progression algorithms are tuned to reward consistent play while keeping competitive tiers meaningful — preventing rank inflation over time.
Anti-Cheat & Fair Play
AI-driven anomaly detection that monitors input patterns, reaction times, movement trajectories, and statistical outliers in real time. Behavioral analysis models flag suspicious accounts for review, while automated enforcement handles clear-cut violations instantly — maintaining competitive integrity without disrupting legitimate players.
Live Streaming Integration
In-platform spectator mode that lets viewers watch live matches with minimal delay, switch between player perspectives, and access real-time stats overlays. Automated clip generation captures highlight moments using event-driven triggers, and one-tap social sharing pushes clips to major platforms to drive organic growth.

Our Role
Staff augmentation, real impact
Devinity deployed backend and infrastructure engineers on a mid-term contract to architect Zawaya's real-time gaming backbone. Our team built the WebSocket infrastructure, matchmaking engine, and auto-scaling systems that power seamless multiplayer experiences at scale. We integrated directly into Zawaya's sprint cycles, participated in architecture reviews, and owned delivery end-to-end — operating as a true extension of their engineering organization rather than a siloed vendor.
